10 Big Reasons to Attend Digital Video Expo
August 24, 2010

DVExpo 2010 Opener

By Iain Stasukevich

The Pasadena Convention Center will be the home of the upcoming Digital Video Expo (www.dvexpo.com; Sept. 29-30). Boasting more than 50 industry-leading exhibitors, the show will be a must-attend event for digital content creators seeking to stay up to date with the latest technology, trends and technique. What follows here is just a small sampling of the companies and products to be seen at on site.

Panasonic
In case you missed it at NAB earlier this year, Panasonic will be showcasing the game-changing AG-3DA1, their SD-card-based HD 3D camcorder, at DV Expo. The lenses, camera head and a dual memory card recorder are integrated into a lightweight body that also incorporates stereoscopic adjustment controls.

If 3D isn’t your thing, you can check out the AG-AF100, a micro 4/3" pro HD camcorder. Targeted at the video and film production communities, the AF100 delivers the shallow depth of field and wider field of view of a camera with a larger imager.

Also check out the AG-HMC80 AVCCAM HD shoulder-mount camcorder, the first in the company’s line of low-cost AVCHD camcorders. Featuring a three-megapixel imager, multiple AVCCAM recording formats, and solid-state DV and HD recording capabilities, the HMC80 is being targeted at schools, event videographers, government facilities, Web designers and corporate users.

On the storage front, the AG-MSU10 P2 Media Storage Unit is a portable workflow tool that simplifies the process of backing up or aggregating P2 content to a larger removable solid-state drive. The unit is meant to remove the need for computers and other appliances in the field and can quickly free up P2 cards for additional shooting. The MSU10 boasts a small form factor with two slots: one for a P2 card and the second for the AG-MBX10 removable housing that encloses a standard 2.5" SATA solid-state drive (SSD). Equipped with USB 2.0 and eSATA connectors.

VariZoom
This innovative support company will be bringing a variety of new and familiar accessories for video, cinema and broadcast. One item is QuickJib, a compact, lightweight, easy-setup crane designed for studios and location-based production.

VariZoom will be introducing Aviator MX-HD, a vested stabilizer with HD sled. Suitable for cameras of 5-18 lb., it features both HDMI and RGB monitor inputs.

Also of interest is the Cinema Pro motion control head, which is capable of recording preset motions and mark points and is compatible with virtual set software. It can rotate up to 512 degrees per second and can handle a payload of up to 50 lb. Also on hand is VariZoom’s usual array of lens controllers and shoulder supports.

Zacuto USA
The support company will showcase its lineup of high-end camera accessories for HD DSLRs, which includes new optical viewfinders. The Z-Finder Pro Series offers a choice of 2.5 or 3.0 focusable magnification, a 40mm diameter optical lens and an anti-fog coating. The Pro models mount to the camera using a Gorilla Plate and Z-Finder aluminum mounting frame.

The Z-Finder Jr. comes standard with 2.5x magnification and mounts to the camera with a stainless steel mounting bracket.

Also see Zacuto’s DSLR Cinema Kits: Single Action, Fast Draw, Cross Fire and Double Barrel; DSLR Gorilla Kits: Target Shooter and Striker; and new DSLR Cinema Kit Accessories: Z-Focus follow-focus and DSLR Baseplate.
Other items include the new Z-Cage, Zgrip iPhone Cinema Kit and the Point & Shoot Pro.

Azden
The audio specialists will display their complete line of audio-for-video products, including the UHF wireless microphone system, shotgun microphones and portable mixers. New products on display include the 310UDR UHF Diversity camera-mount receiver and 330UPR UHF two-channel camera-mount receiver.

Litepanels
This Vitec Group company introduced its Sola Fresnel units at NAB and now brings them to Pasadena. Combining single-shadow Fresnel benefits with LED advantages, the first production models of the portable, battery-operable Sola ENG draw just 30W yet output equivalent to a 250W tungsten Fresnel and are sized for mounting on small camcorders. The Sola 6 draws just 75W with an output equivalent to a 650W tungsten Fresnel. The MicroPro Hybrid was designed for DSLR cameras and combines continuous output and flash in one professional LED fixture. Make sure to check out the Micro, MiniPlus and modular 1x1s as well.

Schneider
Schneider brings its reliable line of optical glass filters, which includes the Classic Soft, DigiCon (for a lighter contrast cine look with digital cameras), polarizers, NDs, attenuators, color correctors, enhancers, and True Cut IR (for richer blacks with CMOS sensor cameras). Their newest filter outfit is the Landscape Control Kit, with a filter holder that attaches to the lens front and can hold two Schneider filters (4x4 and/or 4x5.65 sizes). The kit comes with ND .6 Soft Edge Grad.

Cam Caddie is a low-cost stabilizing handle for lightweight still, DV and DSLR cameras. It dampens movement and emulates jib arm or camera stabilizer moves for application in a variety of situations, from sports to weddings to corporate productions.

Also on hand is the Century brand of add-on lenses, which includes a number of wide-angle adapters, wide-angle converters, fisheye adapters, tele-converters and achromatic diopters for many popular cameras. Also, Century filters specifically selected for DV/HDV/HD/DSLR cinematography.

Zeiss
The optics company brings a great variety of cine and DSLR lenses. Scheduled to appear are the CPU-controlled Zeiss ZF.2 and high-end ZE Planar DSLR lenses. The Zeiss CP.2 lenses make up the second generation of compact primes for digital and film cameras, delivering greater flexibility by introducing interchangeable mounts that allow the lenses to be used with a wide range of cameras, from traditional cine to DSLR systems. The CP.2 Makro–Planar T2.1/50 will also be on hand in PL and EF mount versions, as well as the Zeiss Light Weight Zoom LWZ.2, with its interchangeable mounts (PL, EF and F) for traditional cine cameras and DSLRs.

Canon
Introduced at NAB, the XF305 and XF300 are Canon’s first professional camcorders to support file-based recording and take advantage of the  MPEG-2 4:2:2 50Mb/s MXF codec (Canon XF codec). The cameras support 24p (23.976), 30p (29.97), 60p (59.94), and an optional 25p/50i/50p (with upgrade). There are Slow and Fast Motion modes that allow the XF305 to record a different frame rate than the playback frame rate, resulting in either a fast- or slow-motion effect during playback. Both cameras feature three 1/3” 1920x1080 CMOS sensors, 4:2:2 color sampling, HDMI out, and an L-series lens with an 18x optical zoom, independent rings for focus, zoom and iris — complete with witness marks and end stops on the focus and zoom rings. Additional features vary between the two cameras, both of which will be on display.

Tiffen
Tiffen will unveil a slew of products at the show this year. First up are two new diffusion filters: Soft/FX Black Pro-Mist and Black Glimmer. The first is a combination of the existing Soft/FX filter and Black Pro-Mist filter and provides a wide range of diffusion while toning down excessive sharpness and creating a soft pastel effect. Designed for HD cameras, the Black Glimmer Digital Diffusion/FX filter maintains sharpness, softens detail, brightens skin tones and adds a mild glow and silky transition to highlights. Both filters are available in 4x4 and 4x5.650.

The Pro-V line of Domke pro-video bags are made of heavyweight, water-resistant cotton canvas and rugged ballistic nylon. They offer a combination of traditional Domke features as well as additional storage and heavy padding to protect your video equipment.

The Steadicam Zephyr features a host of “future proof” features that make it a versatile and adaptable tool: a 20 lb. payload capacity, tool-free adjustable iso-elastic arm, telescopic carbon fiber post, and dual axis vernier adjustable stage. Zephyr ships with a 7", 16:9/4:3 composite NTSC/PAL LCD monitor, or optional 7" 16:9/4:3 HD/composite LCD monitor.

Possibly you may wish to add the Sony NEX-VG10...in case you are not aware the big news this year is the fightback from Sony & Panasonic with shallow depth of field camcorders that will allow students and DPs alike to produce film like footage without all the handicaps of the HDSLR.
